Cover every base

Everything’s a module you switch on.

This is the real difference. With BuddyNext every capability below installs free and switches on like a module - one platform, one team, all built to work together. With Heartbeat, the bases it doesn’t cover mean hunting down a third-party plugin from another maker and hoping it fits.

Credit where it's due

Where Heartbeat is the better choice.

No hand-waving. These are real strengths, and for some communities they are the deciding factor.

  • A modern, chat-first community feel. Heartbeat's channels, threads, DMs, and live voice/video rooms give members a Discord-meets-membership experience that feels lively out of the box - that real-time energy is its core strength.
  • Batteries-included for a creator business on day one: courses, documents, event pages, payments, affiliate/referral tools, and automations are all native, so you are not assembling a stack.
  • Zero maintenance. No servers, no plugins, no WordPress to manage - Heartbeat runs it all, and the product is polished without any design or setup work.
  • A fast start for a non-technical coach or creator: sign up, brand it, invite members, and you are live the same afternoon.
  • Native iOS and Android apps (on the higher tier) that have been in market and refined for a while, with voice/video rooms supporting large groups.

The case for BuddyNext

Where BuddyNext is the better choice.

And here is the other side - where owning your community and building on WordPress pays off.

  • Heartbeat wraps chat, courses, and events into a hosted creator space; BuddyNext is a whole platform built in-house by one team - community, forums, courses, events, a job board, a marketplace, and gamification together - and you own it on your own site rather than renting it by the month.
  • Your community, its chat history, and your members live in your own WordPress database, not on Heartbeat's servers where the apps, the channels, and the access rules all belong to the platform. If Heartbeat changes a tier or a feature, your data is unaffected because you hold it.
  • No per-member monthly fee and no platform cut of your revenue. You pay for hosting and an optional Pro license, not a percentage of every transaction.
  • You can stand up a real community on the free core without paying a cent, and nothing in it expires. Heartbeat starts at roughly $49/mo with no free plan, so the meter runs from day one.
  • Build on a free REST API, restyle from your theme with CSS tokens, and reach for any WordPress plugin you need. Heartbeat keeps you inside its own feature set and integrations.
  • You are never locked into one vendor. The community lives in WordPress, so you can switch hosts, extend it, or rebuild the front end whenever you choose.

The whole platform, in one plugin

Everything BuddyNext gives you, in one plugin.

Most alternatives cover a slice of this, or send you assembling third-party add-ons from other makers to get the rest. BuddyNext ships the whole platform - 74+ features across 11 areas - built by one team, so it all works together instead of just sitting side by side. Here is the full surface, not a footnote.

Pro marks a Pro-tier feature. Everything else is in the free plugin.

The honest verdict

So which should you pick?

Choose Heartbeat if…

You want a modern, chat-first community with live voice and video that feels energetic from day one, you want courses and payments bundled in, and you would rather pay monthly than touch a server. Heartbeat is the cleaner choice for a creator or coach who values that real-time, batteries-included experience over owning the stack.

Our pick, honestly stated

Choose BuddyNext if…

Live voice and video rooms are a nice-to-have rather than the heart of your community, and what you really care about is owning the data and keeping costs down. You would rather hold your members in your own database than pay Heartbeat monthly plus a cut of payments, and you are happy running WordPress (or letting a host run it) to get that. Worth knowing: built-in voice/video rooms are not a BuddyNext feature today, so if real-time presence is the whole point, Heartbeat keeps the edge there.

Honest answers

Questions buyers ask first.

Can I self-host Heartbeat?

No - Heartbeat is hosted only, with your community sitting on its servers and no way to run it on hardware you control. BuddyNext is built the other way round: you install it on your own WordPress, so the members and content stay in your database.

Does BuddyNext match Heartbeat's live chat and voice rooms?

Only partly, and this is Heartbeat's strongest card. Its real-time channels and voice/video rooms are a core feature. BuddyNext gives you 1:1 messaging on the free core and adds group and real-time messaging on Pro, but it does not ship live voice/video rooms as of mid-2026 - if that always-on energy is what holds your community together, that is a real point in Heartbeat's favour.

Does BuddyNext charge a fee on my revenue like Heartbeat does?

No. BuddyNext takes no platform cut. When you charge for access with BuddyNext Pro, the only fee is your own payment processor's (e.g. Stripe). Heartbeat adds a per-transaction platform fee on top of processor fees, which shrinks as you move to higher tiers but never disappears on lower ones.

Is Heartbeat easier to start with?

For a non-technical coach or creator, yes - Heartbeat is sign up and go, with the apps and channels ready immediately. BuddyNext expects a WordPress site to exist first. Already on WordPress? The difference is minor. Starting from nothing? Heartbeat reaches live sooner, and BuddyNext repays the extra setup with ownership.

Is BuddyNext cheaper than Heartbeat?

For most growing communities, yes, over time. Heartbeat is a recurring monthly subscription plus transaction fees with no free plan; BuddyNext has a complete free tier and an optional annual Pro license, with your own hosting as the main running cost. The trade-off is that you (or your host) maintain WordPress, where Heartbeat maintains everything for you.
